The Spartanburg girls trailed Dorman by two points heading into the final event on Thursday. The loudest cheers of the night came from the Spartanburg fans when it was over.
Spartanburg won the 400-yard freestyle relay and beat the Lady Cavaliers 146-140 in Region II-4A swimming at the Pine Street YMCA. The Lady Vikings took the final event by two tenths of a second.
The team of Charlotte Ward, Emma Duesterhaus, Jillian Eickman, and Chrissy Oberg won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:53.53 for Spartanburg (5-0). Laura Wilkes, Anna-Layne Kinsey, Ariane Nguyenduy, and Tori Angermeier had a time of 3:53.73 for Dorman (3-2).
"We knew we were behind by a few points heading into the relay, so we knew we had to win," Oberg said. "I didn't know it would be such a close race. This feels incredible."
Oberg also won the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.85) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.53).
"This was a great meet," said first-year Spartanburg coach Mary Brito, who replaced John Wolfe after 10 years. "Both teams had some really competitive swimmers, but we came through tonight."
Lauryl Williams won the 50-yard (25.03) and the 100-yard (56.08) freestyle for Dorman. Williams, who is in the eighth grade, is undefeated in those events this season.
"We tried our best tonight and that's all that matters," Williams said. "We've been practicing five days a week and working hard."
"Our kids laid it on the line tonight and gave it everything they had," Dorman coach Amy Thomson said. "We are putting in the work and are very focused on getting where the higher region teams are."
The Spartanburg boys beat Dorman 157-129 to move to 5-0 on the year.
Semmes Gilmore took the 200-yard (1:53.20) and 500-yard (5:05.32) freestyle for Spartanburg. Gilmore is a senior who is in his sixth season with the team.
"We were very motivated tonight," Gilmore said. "This is a great feeling especially since it's my senior year. We wanted to beat them one more time."
Antoine Connors won the 50-yard (22.26) and the 100-yard (49.44), and Drew Oberg took the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.39) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.08) for Spartanburg.
Jay Warner won the 100-yard backstroke (57.11) for Dorman (3-2).
"We were very ready and prepared for tonight," Spartanburg's Sam Mercer said.

Do we have to get autographs now that he has been quoted?

I love how they gave the times of other swimmers, not Sam, but put in Sam's quote. Must have a word count limit in the Spartanburg paper!
