We are not actually staying in a hotel here in Ploiesti (pronounced "Ploy-esh"). we are staying in a house that is owned by our Company. It has that highly technical name called "The Casa de Company" or "Company House".
Front Of House From Street |
It is a three story Romanian bungalow with a reasonably large living room/dining room/kitchen combination, 6 bedrooms (2 rooms per floor), 7 bathrooms and a basement "office" that is really just a basement with a really old desk and rickety chair. At least we have wireless internet. Each bedroom has a bed, dresser, free standing closet and small bathroom. No desk.
Our own "Housemother", Lily, arrives each morning at 06:00 AM to cook breakfast for everybody, wash/fold/iron laundry, clean the rooms and house, and go grocery shopping. She is gone by the time we return. She doesn't work weekends.
Ok, so maybe it's a bit spartan with no wall hangings and in need of some fresh wall paint, but it is fairly comfortable and is much cheaper than a hotel room - and at least it does have the common living area for socializing which you wouldn't get in a hotel room. The Front Entry Courtyard |
I began the week making the joke that we would be like one of those MTV reality shows where 6 guys share a house and we have to live and work together and then somebody has to get mad at somebody and stir up silly arguments and then once a week we vote someone out of the house, but so far as soon as we return in the evenings, everybody disappears into their rooms to do whatever work they need to do. I am the only one using the common living area, so I guess that is how we avoid the conflicts so nobody gets voted out.
But with no desks in the rooms, I am not going to sit uncomfortably on the the bed and work; that's what the big sofa and coffee table is for!
Front Foyer with View of Circular Stairs To 2nd Floor |
However, we do go to dinner together in different groups so we're not a totally unsocial crowd.
My room is on the 3rd floor. Up the circular stairway, down a 10 foot hallway and then up a straight set of stairs.
I have a skylight; and since the sun comes up at 06:00 AM, there will be no sleeping late on Sunday morning!
Some Anonymous Blog Commenter (I am guessing ECM) requested more pictures of Romania, so we'll start with the house and then expand outward from there.

Thanks for the pictures...actually ERM's request
Really - Elise commented that? COOL!
I'm sitting here racking my brain trying to remember the last time she actually left a comment.
Thanks!!
That is actually pretty nice if you ask me. Much better than a hotel room, and you get cleaning, cooking, shopping, and the lady is gone before you get home from work. Wow, what a concept, a woman's touch around the house without, as Kramer said on Seinfeld, having to tell her "how your day was, what did you do today, honey?" And, you can watch tv and eat at the couch, which Kramer said your wife would not let you do either! You may be on to something here Mitchell!
As long as she has a pretty good idea of which beers are good and which ar not, then having the house mother is a good thing. Looks pretty nice to me. How long will you be there? -S.
